Pet Shih Tzu
"Ke ai" puppy cut
2
"Step one,"
  • Step one, clean corners of eyes with a #10 or #15 blade. Use the blade away from the eye. Some dogs are not used to the clippers on their face, you may have to use thinning shears in place of the clippers. Run the thinning shears up in between the eyes to clean out the corners and keep the hair from irritating the eye.
3
"Clean hair around the ear..."
  • Clean hair around the ear canal with a #10 or #15 blade, again your dog may not be used to clippers so you may use blunt scissors or thinning shears.
4
"Shave around the anus to..."
  • Shave around the anus to keep clean.
5
"Clip hair around penis to..."
  • Clip hair around penis to keep clean.
6
"I usually do a rough..."
  • I usually do a rough clip before bathing. You can use any length blade you want. I am using a #2 snap on comb to give this dog a puppy appearance. Other blades to use would be #4, #5, or #7 This will make the coat shorter. The higher the # blade the shorter the cut.
7
"You want to clip with..."
  •   You want to clip with the grain of the coat. Meaning the way it lays.
8
"When shaving under the chin..."
  • When shaving under the chin make sure you stop at the breast bone.
9
"Clip hair from the arm..."
  •  Clip hair from the arm pits towards the breast bone. This will prevent a hole where cowlicks are.
10
"Make sure you clip the..."
  •  Make sure you clip the sides all the way under the belly of the dog to make it even. Again going with the grain of the coat.
11
"Clip the inside of the..."
  • Clip the inside of the legs with the same blade as you are using on the body. I clip it close by the genitals then skim the rest of the way down the leg.
12
"Pluck the hair out of..."
  •   Pluck the hair out of the ear canals using ear powder ( this helps to grip the hair ) and a pair of hemostats. Make sure you just get the hair in the canal, pulling hair on the outside will hurt your dog. Then clean out with a good ear cleaner with a drying agent. Shih tzus have floppy ears and moisture will get caught in the ear and cause bacteria to grow, this will cause infections.
13
"Clip the nails each time..."
  •  Clip the nails each time you fully groom your dog. Just take off the tips or the part that curls. Make sure you have quick stop incase you make one bleed.
14
"Express the anal glands just..."
  • Express the anal glands just before bathing. This secretion stinks and you want to wash the dogs thoroughly after. This keeps your dog from scooting on the rug or floor and helps prevent blockage and infections.
15
"When washing or rinsing the..."
  •  When washing or rinsing the face of your dog it makes it easy if you grab some hair on his chin to keep him in place. Then run the water around the nose to keep the water from going into his nose. This is a short nose breed of dog (bracealsaphalic) and the water going up their nose may drown them.
16
"Make sure you rinse all..."
  •  Make sure you rinse all of the shampoo out of your dog. Leaving shampoo in will cause irritation and skin problems. I use a mild oatmeal shampoo with my dogs and bathe no more then once a week.
17
"I use a spray on..."
  •  I use a spray on leave in conditioner on my dogs. This helps keep the coat healthy and mat free. Apply this when the coat is still wet and dry in the coat.
18
"Blow dry the coat using..."
  •  Blow dry the coat using a force dryer or place your pooch in the crate with a cage dryer attached. Force drying is quicker, but your dog may NOT like it because it is very forceful and maybe on the loud side. I get all of my dogs used to everything at a young age.
19
"Drying your dog takes patients..."
  • Drying your dog takes patients and time. Make sure you get every inch, If you leave coat to dry on its own you may cause skin irritations on the dog. A wet basement never dries it just grows mold and mildew and bacteria. Thick coated dogs don't air dry to the skin very well and bacteria grows to cause skin irritations.
20
Brush your dog thoroughly after blow drying.

24
After brushing be sure to comb through the coat to find mats you may have missed.
25
Re-clip you dog to smooth out rough edges. Again making sure to go with the grain of the coat

When trimming the tail you want to pull all the hair towards you and clip off 1/2 inch or so from the end. Comb the hair down as it falls from the tail holding the tip between your fingers.
Then with straight shears trim
the bottom a desired length.
This is called flagging.
31
Clip the hair in between the pads using round shears. This may also be done with clippers. Be sure to spread the pads to get in between them.
32
Comb the hair over the feet and trim around the foot using round shears.
33
Trim down the hair on the hocks. Fluff up the hair with a comb then trim down with straight shears.
34
Comb the hair out from inside the legs and trim evenly.
35
Fluff up the hair on the legs with a comb and then trim down with straight shears. I like to keep the legs fuller than the body, this gives it more of a puppy look.
36

37
Comb out the hair inside the legs and trim up to even.
38
Round the ears a desired length. I like to have them a bit longer than the beard. Make sure you know where the leather of the ears are before trimming, you don't want to cut too close.
39
Comb the hair over the eyes and trim with thinning shears.
40
Trim the beard a desired length. Be careful not to cut the chin. Sometimes these dogs have skin that hangs and you can not see it through all the hair. You don't want to have to make a trip to the vet.
41
Round the beard up to the ear and even out the hair. This gives his face a round appearance.

The finished product. Isn't he cute?
